John Hughes 1950-2009

I'm going to follow the lead of Catherine J. Gardner and post a clip of one of my favourite John Hughes movies. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is a must see for any fan of slapstick comedy...or domestic travel. It starred Steve Martin and the late Canadian comedian John Candy. Hughes was a gifted writer and director who died before his time.

Having trouble attaching the video trailer from YouTube directly, but here is the link.

John Hughes was awesome in the 80s. I'm probably one of the few that actually liked Curly Sue in the early 90s even.

Ferris Bueller was always a funny one for me. Funny-odd, that is. I'm pretty much over it now, all logic aside about my original feelings, but Matthew Broderick was fairly infamous in Norn Ireland for being involved in a car crash that killed a mother and daughter while he was holidaying here.

There was a genuine lynch mob mentality going on that I wasn't immune to. The perception was of a big star who came here, got involved in an accident and had no consequences from it. In retrospect, nobody seemed to even weigh up the fact he'd chosen to come here when the "Troubles" were FAR from being resolved.

Obviously the reality was that there were certainly consequences. it's just odd how real life can effect ephemera like Hollywood movies.

I miss John Candy. I loved the old SCTV series, and Candy was one of the real gems. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was hilarious, and I didn't make the John Hughes connection until now. Awesome.
