Al's Brain on Comics...

It's a sad state of affairs that instead of working on this week's #Fridayflash I am scanning comics to post on this blog [sighs]. My work ethic sucks. But it's for the greater good.

Cathy Olliffe has been doing a tremendous job the past few days profiling, interviewing and presenting American writers at her blog. She has been showing sides of these people that have not been seen by their readers before. The adventure continued today as she presented Mark Kerstetter and his story Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. And stay tuned for a few more days as Cathy has a fine selection of #Fridayflash writers yet to put on display.

I have always maintained that you can also reveal much about a person by studying their sense of humour...or lack thereof. I recently unearthed an old scrapbook from the damp Davidson cellar. I started this repository of comics at the age of 17 and continued until I was about 30. I couldn't scan many of the comics as I had glued them down with rubber cement. That combined with the yellowing of the paper makes them fairly unreadable when scanned. I present to you a rare glimpse into the brain of moi and what I find funny. Those of you of the same 'vintage' as myself may remember some of these from 'back in the day'.

Of course, I must acknowledge the artists: Mr. Gary Larson from his famous The Far Side strip, Mr. Berke Breathed of Outland fame and Mr. Dik Browne of Hagar. The only picture not attributed to these three was the gerbil picture by Mr. Emerson from Penthouse (honest, it was my room mate's magazine...I just perused it for the comics). I hope you get a chuckle or two. Do notice the odd writer reference and the ones about dogs...

I know, you wanna see if I'm really paying attention, right? Only one of these cartoons brought more than a smile, but that one made me Really Laugh - the kid in the bottle: "Beats me how they did it!" I'm still laughing. What does that say about me?

The one that made me laugh out loud, and i mean OUT LOUD (Dave's in the living room saying, "What the hell's so funny?" was the Squished Muffy dog and the football game...
Nothing funnier than a squished muffy...

Thanks for all the plugs, by the way. How much do I owe ya?

I remember reading Far Side books not so long ago*, asking my parents what some of them meant. Now I get not just a kick out of them, but a kind of nostalgia.

*Oh god, it was that long ago, wasn't it? How did I ever make it to this age? I realize it's not so advanced, but really didn't see that coming...

Funny stuff. Thanks for the laugh. Just what I needed after today. I fondly remember The Far Side from my ever distancing youth.

I own about 99% of the Farside and Bloom County (what Berke Breathed was REALLY famous for!) books. Along with Calvin and Hobbes and significant amounts of Dan Piraro (who blogs over here: http://bizarrocomic.blogspot.com/ )

I love comics. These days I'm all about

xkcd

A Softer World

Dilbert

Amazing Super Powers

Ah...The Far Side. That's the stuff. I have every line in several of those books packed away in the ol' memory banks.

Hagar's great. You got a laugh out of me on the others as well, Alan. Thanks.

I quite enjoyed them all, but I will admit that Hagar's new under britches was a hum dinger. Gonna go check out Cathy (the blog not the comic)

thanks for the following :-)

Mark- Ha, the baby in a bottle. I suppose those closest to you should be concerned. Unless, of course you right horror. Then it's OK.

Cathy- Well you know that one's got to be a favourite, what with me having been a dog catcher in a former life.

Katey- I guess when I was in my 20's and reading The Far Side, you were a little girl needing the humour deciphered from the comics. It sucks to get old.

Jameson- I think the comics brighten everone's day a bit. I find the ones I liked back then are all gone now.

Anthony- Your welcome. Farside was awesome...remember the 'boneless chicken ranch'?

Nat- I kind of thought the comic with a small dog and espresso would win you over.

Anton- I actually took off the two Outland comics I had up there because the text was way too small and nobody could read them. I loved Bill the Cat -Ack!-

Aaron- The Far Side was a classic, for sure.

David- I liked the last comic the best 'The Vaccination Man'. Of course reminds one of the icecream vans that used to drive about. Remember the Bill Forsyth movie 'Comfort and Joy' about the two families fighting over the icecream market in Glasgow? Great stuff.

Paige- Hagar and his wife were always a good comentary on marital relationships. Sort of...

Hogar has always been my favourite!

Ha! I thought I had every Far Side memorized, but I swear I've never seen the Vaccination Man one. I loved it! The others are funny too (and I hadn't thought of old Hagar in years).

Great comics Alan! Thanks for sharing.

I too believe you can tell a lot about a person from their sense of humor, also their taste in ice cream, liquor and what kind of underwear they wear...

Dez- I really like Hagar as well.

KC- Vaccination man sounds like the name of a short story in a King novel. Wonder if AC/DC would do the soundtrack.

Kara- You're welcom. You've seen my sense of humour. I like mint chocolate chip icecream, single malt scotch and I wear my underwear until the holes cause them to fall apart....then they become dust cloths (TMI?).
