Ain't No Sunshine

We in St. John’s are beginning to understand what it’s like to be a mushroom. Kept somewhat moist and warm and in the dark. The fog started rolling in from the Atlantic late Saturday and we haven’t seen the sky since.

The following screen shots are from the harbour cam on top of The Rooms, our provincial museum high up the hill that overlooks downtown. On a normal day (as per the first shot) you can see blue sky, Signal Hill and the brackish water of the harbour (just be thankful it’s just the sights and NOT the smells). The second shot has been our view for the past four days.

Notice the cruise ship coming in through the narrows

Like something from a Stephen King movie

Thankfully we’re not really into tourist season yet. Maybe the fog will lift by July…

Speaking of impeded views…I read a blog today that mentioned a recent article by Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. I linked to Ebert's Journal and read ‘The Dying of the Light’, a fascinating look at the onslaught of 3D digital movies by Hollywood and the new projectors that produce “gloomy, underlit images.” Mr. Ebert also points out that many theatres are leaving the 3D lenses in the projectors (mainly because the new projectors are very complex to open), even for 2D films, and the result is that the lens absorbs 50% of the light trying to pass through. Use the link to pop over and check out his story.

In an effort to lift the spirits this gloomy evening, I’ll link to a video of George Harrison singing "Here Comes the Sun". Every little bit helps.

I just read Ebert's piece about dark movies. That makes me so angry! And how can the industry be so stupid as to show inferior product in the face of so much competition? I certainly have noticed how dark movies are. I thought it was just a moodiness they were aiming for... Pirates was particularly dark and depressing and I saw the 2D version. Sigh.
Well, I do hope the fog clears over in Davidsonville. At least your skin will be dewey.

THAT'S what it looks like over there?? There is no way I could deal with that....I have a hard enough time on the overcast days here. Here's hoping you find some sunshine soon!

I love fog although we never get that much so maybe in this case I might get sick of it.

Well, over here in the UK we've had mad weather too. I mean, c'mon - we're not supposed to have endless days of sun and blue skies and high temps (even in the height of summer - and then never for two days running!) but this Spring has seen the blossoms come and go like Mother Nature has her finger on the fast-forward button and now we're into crops fruiting too early .....

I expect July and August will see sleet, snow and frost.....

Is this the effect of what they call 'global warming' ? :-o

I've been trying to organize an exchange of weather with some writers in warmer climes. I have a bottle of fog all packaged up and ready to go.

That is a really interesting link about the 3D movies. I'll have to pass that one on to Hubby. Maybe next time he'll pass on 3D version and those stupid glasses.

Ebert's gripe feels like the thing people who didn't like 3D have been waiting for. Now they have something to grab onto when they complain, even if most wouldn't have noticed the difference in person.

Personally, I'll just pass on 3D showings.

Looks like you're living in a horror movie!

Cathy- Yeah, we had a bit of a break from the fog yesterday but it's back this morning. I always go to the 2D films if I've got an option.

Gigi- It just seems bad because of the camera being up in a cloud bank. It's not as bad at ground level. I can almost see my neighbour's house across the road...

Danielle- Wouldn't the fog, combined with an old cemetery, be a cool location to write a horror story!

Sue- OK, now your just rubbing our noses in it! There's definately something up with the weather. Not a lot of snow here the past couple of winters.

Laurita- Good luck at getting 'J' to pass on the 3D. Just wait until all TV shows are that way too! Did you talk to Laura yet about getting that sunshine keg shipped up from FLA?

John- I hear what you're saying. My gripe in the past has been about the extra 3 bucks per ticket. Now there's a technological arguement coming into play.

Laura- Yeah, that or maybe one of those creatures from the Japanese horror films.

Nat- The weather's been really freaky here the past week. Next thing ya know it'll be raining pugs...

Very interesting post. I hope your view clears soon. I'm so glad to have found your blog and I look forward to visiting again soon!

That is some pea soup. Either that or someone needs to climb up and wipe off the lense. And someone definitely needs to learn to operate the projector when it comes to switching to the appropriate lense for the film. How hard can it be?

Hey Laurita, I'll take you up on the climate exchange if we can find reasonable shipping. Sunny & hot here.
