Silence, Leading to Retro

Kind of an odd post title, don't you think?

That's because it's Tuesday and I haven't posted anything since last Friday. Even then, the post wasn't a conversational thing, but a #fridayflash story. I find myself at a loss for words. I know! Who would have thought that Al would have nothing to say...how bizarre is that?

Since there are no conversations happening here today I may have to change the name of the blog to just Land's Edge. Or perhaps Island of the Mute. Or maybe Lobsters and Silence in the North Atlantic...OK, now I'm rambling. Let me know if you've got ideas for a new blog title for me.

The 'one year' anniversary of my blog is fast approaching this weekend. I'm toying with a contest idea that I will announce at that time. Maybe. It must first be cleared by the Minister of Finance.

Wow! A year has passed already? I think retro is the way to go. I refer you to my third posting of May 2009 when I rambled on about urban legends that were discussed on the radio and how they could be fodder for stories. It's very short. I had nothing to say back then either. You can link to that here...got any urban legends from your part of the world? Tell me, please, because I've got nothing else to talk about! Please share them with the fine readers of this humble blog. I leave you with a photo of some disco guy from the '70's. No he is not me, nor anyone I know. Trying a bit too hard to be like Dan Ackroyd's character from SNL, methinks...

I loves me a good hairy chest.
And I look forward to any contest you come up with...can hardly wait, actually.
Anything you have to say is always appreciated.

Ok, here's something I read about once. Legend has it that many of the taxi drivers in Washington DC, where I now live, are in fact former leaders and diplomats from foreign governments that have been exiled, overthrown, or suffered a military coup.

Now that I reread that, I realize that it's such a boring legend! DC is not a jazzy town, I'm afraid. :)

That picture of you...I mean...some random dude is hilarious! *where IS his right hand going?*

A reminder that a love carpet and checked fabrics don't go together :)

How's this for urban legends, beasties and the like in my neck of the woods? Only Mainers are aware of this. Stephen King does not write fiction . . . . dum, dum, dum.

Alan, the retro guy is a tad scary! Ooh, ooh, flashback. That hurts.

Well I'm partial to the -escaped pet snakes traversing sewer pipes and winding up in the neighbor's toilet- urban legend.

Dezmond almost killed me with "love carpet" but I was already swaying from lack of oxygen from laughing at the photo. man. that guy asked me out in 1979 I swear.

I went to OU Athens...my school was haunted. The art department (isn't that nice when you're an art major?) put a gallery in an old mental hospital that OU purchased years ago.

Apparently while it was still a hospital they decided to remodel and one of their schizophrenic patients went missing. They looked for weeks and couldn't find her. Until one day some construction workers went up to the third floor and found her corpse. She had just laid down and starved to death. She wasn't locked in, she never cried out when they were searching for her. She simply laid down and died. She was young, too, in her 30's.

Anyway, they tried to get the stain out of the floor, but they couldn't. Then OU bought the place and they scrubbed the floor, put down new floors, and eventually poured concrete over the stain. They paint it often, but guess what? She's still there. You can clearly see the outline of a woman's body curled up on the floor. It looks like a shadow. And it disappears for a day or two when they paint--but she always comes back.

Like I said, it's a gallery now, not that floor, but that building. And freaky crap happens there all the time.

She's just one of several ghosts at OU. But I always felt her tale was sad...

Cathy- Thanks. Your first sentence almost makes you sound like you're from Newfoundland.

Marisa- I think it's an interesting story. Imagine the stories they've got to tell or the secrets they keep...his hand? Perhaps that's where MJ learned that dance move.

Dez- I have never heard chest hair refered to as a 'love carpet' before, my friend. That's the funniest thing I have heard in a long time.

Becca- What? Everything King rights about is true? I didn't need to hear that, just having watched 'The Mist' on TV last weekend...all those large instects lurking about Maine...what's that gonna do for tourism?

Helen- Now are saying you knew somebody that dressed like that back in the '70's, Helen?

Karen- Perhaps your neighbour really does deserve a visit from the toilet snake...and did you go out with the plaid guy? We all want to know!

Kat- That's a spooky story. If that doesn't inspire somebody to write a horror story, I don't know what does. Thanks for sharing that!

Man. You've made some big strides in a year, Alan. I totally forgot about the sweet "Simpsons" Alan avatar from back in the day.

Dunno Alan, I can see the resemblance :P

As for urban legends, I'm out. OH! Wait... We have one where if you go into the wrong side of town by accident (aka get lost) and ask for directions on a certain street, the gang leader will hunt you down and shoot you for talking to one of his people... does that count?

Happy-soon-to-be-One-year-anniversary!

DEZMOND said...

yes, yes, there are "love carpets", there are "treasure trails" .... but maybe I shouldn't elaborate on that one :)

I completely support "Lobsters and Silence in the North Atlantic." It's got a Thomas Harris vibe, if Harris was a bearded fisherman.

Here comes the anniversary! Will there be cake?

Alan? cover your ears....

@Dezmond. Treasure trails. TOTALLY love that little line of fur at the midline of the belly, especially when it disappears into low slung jeans....

laughing...and wondering if this comment will be here in the morning...

ok, Alan, you can uncover your ears....

Odd post titles are the best. Taking a break is fine too.
Congrats on a year upcoming - take a moment to appreciate your work.

Nat- Perhaps you should write this dude into one of you current WIPs.

Aaron- Thanks a lot. I still use that as my Facebook avatar. I thought you would have commented on the Anton Gully photo...

Kara- I saw the resemblance as well. Thanks for noticing ;) It sounds like you live in a tough place.

Dez- Perhaps you should be writing erotic fiction to share your knowledge of such things with the rest of the world.

John- Nice! Though that may be the closest comparison to Thomas Harris I'll ever get. I was thinking of packaging up crab, fish, mussels, etc. and mailing it to all of you. Without ice, or course.

Karen- My virgin ears have heard worse...I believe it may have been at your blog, actually...[dabs ears with tissues, trying to stem bleeding]

Erin- Thanks, a few days off once in a while is good to 'recharge' the batteries. Now taking the time to appreciate.

Will there be cake?

Hmmmmmmmmmm How 'bout something from my neck of the woods about The Jersey Devil???

We started on Blogger about the same time but you still have the same blog? Dude, I'm on my seventh, not including emergency back-up blogs under even faker identities. You need to catch up!

Alan W. Davidson said...

Jeremy- Thanks for coming out (as in attending, not the other coming out...) There may be cake, but I don't think it would travel very well.

Anthony- You know, I was reading about that recently on Wikipedia. I ending up bookmarking another odd 'creature' from your neck of the woods for future reference. Link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montauk_Monster

Anton- Welcome back...I think. I just know what works and stick with it (dude, if I need a back-up blog your the man).
